Best Foot Forwards

City living gets a chic makeover with these sculptural wedges from Zara. In sleek and shiny black with a super high, 10cm platform heel, they are office meets off duty all wrapped up in one cool new season package.

Wedges and clogs have both had a fashion moment recently so these leather wedges are right on trend, sartorially speaking. Made from 100% leather they have a glossy patent like finish which speaks of pencil skirts and pinstripe trousers but after hours, they can be just as easily paired with a figure skimming LBD or juxtaposed against some ripped, scuffed jeans and simple tee. Practical and pretty, the curvaceous arch gives way to a fully open toe – rock with or without ankle socks for too-cool-for-school style. £79.99 from Zara.com.

In The Pink

We don’t know what it is but we’re loving super cute brights at the moment and these hot pink wedges fit the bill perfectly. Although they are a stand out piece and guaranteed to brighten and shoe closet – or pair of feet lucky enough to be snugly encased in them – there’s also something incredibly versatile about this design. Savvy fashionistas will know what we’re talking about here – if you’re the kind of girl who refuses to retire your shorts and maxi dresses when winter knocks and prefer to layer them up and transition your favorite items to the new season – you’ll know what we mean by this versatility.

Yes they are a swoon-worthy pink. Yes they are an open toe. Yes, they are suede and therefore at the mercy of rain and snow and general winter nastiness. BUT, it’s so retro cool to wear nights or cute little ankle socks with an open toe that we think these will do well in winter. And what’s hotter than hot pink clashed wither serious blacks? Not much. And as for precipitation? Huh. Get us some shoe protection spray!

Of course when summer rolls round, these beautiful wedges come into their own. With a 13cm heel height they’re comfortably towering and the double strap, sling back and buckle fastening screams out for some air (so more people can see and therefore admire them). But what we really, really love is the color. Race you to the store. $100 from RiverIsland.com.

Matiko Fantastico

Sometimes you come across a pair of shoes which you immediately envisage in your wardrobe. You begin to think what you would wear them with. You plan how you’ll accessorize them. You start to wonder when your very first chance to wear them will be.

These stunning Matiko wedges from TopShop are those shoes. Chunky platforms with an ultra high heel and geometric cut out soles, they are available in a choice for four colors with both a studded and non studded stem. Choose from black or leopard print with a plain wooden heel or nude, black or red with a sassy studded heel.

Stack It Up

Wedges are having a moment. A fashion moment, if you will. While there’s no denying that strappy, sexy sandals have the power to make any girl feel like a goddess, wedges are just summer in a shoe as far as we’re concerned.

Aldo’s Carnett sports a towering 5.25 inch high heel and  1.5 inch platform

With hazy days filled with sunshine, trips to the beach and long evenings outdoors chilling, eating and drinking in the last of the day’s rays, comes a desire to be a little more comfortable. We’re not saying flats – perish the thought – but there’s something comfortingly practical about wedges. There’s no height lost so we don’t have to re-consider any of our usual wardrobe choices and they pair just as well with shorts as jeans. In fact, wedges are great for smartening up a day-to-night look without sacrificing any easy breezy summer vibes.

The Reva is also high and under $60 but adds a dressed up element to a summer look

The stacked heel makes running off to the beach easy and they’re comfortable enough to stand up to a summer in the city too thanks to the extra expansive of support the chunky soles provide. All in all, if the sun is shining, we say, Stack it Up!

Weird and wonderful wooden wedges

wedge heeled broguesWooden wedges are definitely fashionable right now, but have you seen some of the weird and wonderful designs for wooden heels that are making an impact this season? Amongst all the more “normal” wooden wedges there are some really bizarre designs that are worth taking a closer look at.

Our pick of the craziest are these grey leather wing tip brogues from B Store. The stacked leather heel on the sole of the brogue is attached to a solid wooden wedge platform to create a truly unique and mad effect. These are certainly an eye-catching shoe!

Good to Know: Raphael Young

Actress Ginnifer Goodwin is one of our ones-to-watch on the red carpet. The brunette beauty is always very stylish in a unique way that stands out among the celebrity crowd. Accordingly, she’s a good one to keep an eye on for hot new shoe designers. The star recently attended a charity event in Los Angeles and wore a chic Monique Lhuillier cocktail dress with a pair of unexpected red shoes. Yet even more impressive then the fact that the shoes were red is that they sported a patterned platform wedge. Definitely not your run-o-the mill ensemble!

The shoes are made by Raphael Young. The young designer is Paris-based and has the distinction of learning his craft as an intern at the legendary Yves Saint Laurent fashion house. Check out a bit of the awesome variety in the designers Spring 2011 collection. More at raphaelyoung.com.
