4 reasons why black is the most popular color for high heels

Earlier on this site I covered the conclusive evidence that black is by far the most popular color for high heels.

(I even pointed out that this is kind of cheating since black isn’t technically a color – it’s the absence of color – but it is still the most popular whatever you call it.

Here are four good reasons why black heels are so popular.

1. Black goes with anything

It doesn’t matter what color outfit you are wearing, a pair of black pumps will positively go OK with *anything.

Perhaps this is the “absence of color” argument again.

This means the choice of black can take a lot of pressure off if you’re having an outfit decision meltdown in the morning.

Just put on your black heels and you’re done (and clothes too, obviously). You’re guaranteed not to clash with yourself.

2. Black is sober when required

Life is lots of fun, except when it isn’t.

High heels are often worn in a work context and sometimes there are meetings and events where you really don’t want everyone admiring your blingy shoes.

Simple black work pumps are the go-to shoe for these events (nude is often OK too as well). Something neutral can give you the lift without copping the looks.

3. Black doesn’t show dirt or marks

If black is the most popular color for work pumps, then it must be remembered that our work pumps take a beating.

They are always crashing through offices, lifts, carparks, inside and out. They’re going to get dirty and marked quickly.

Dirt and marks are harder to see on a dark colored heel such as black, which makes them an obvious choice.

4. Black is easily polished

A final reason why black is so popular is actually related to reason number 3.

It is inevitable that your heels will lose pieces of leather and get scuffed, nicked and otherwise damaged if you wear them all the time (for example as you make it through the day in work pumps).

You can repair this easily with shoe polish, provided the polish matches your shoes. That’s really easy to do with black heels because black polish is readily available. That’s not so much the case with midnight blue or lime green.

So there you have it, black’s absence of color makes it the number one color for high heels. And that’s a fact.
